Throne of Glass Title: Throne of Glass Author: Sarah J. Maas Publication Date: August 7th, 2012 Publisher: Bloomsbury Category: Young Adult Genre: High Fantasy Star Rating: 4 out of 5 Summary: After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her ... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined. My Thoughts:
It took me quite some time to enter this fandom. Throne of Glass sat on my shelf for about two years before I decided to pick it up. My friends would threaten me, begging me to read this book and series but for some odd reason I still had no interest. I had even read ACOTAR/ACOMAF also by Miss Maas but still didn't pick ToG up. They hype for this series was so big that I guess I just didn't feel prepared to become apart of it. It wasn't until after Crooked Kingdom where my heart hurt and I was in an infamous book-hangover that I decided to finally pick Throne of Glass up. I knew I need a fast-paced, high fantasy, engrossing read with fantastic writing and I just knew after reading A Court of Mist and Fury that I could count on Sarah J. Maas for just that. This book was incredibly well written. It was complex and intricate with amazing world building and equally fantastic characters. Each character had a purpose, they weren't just some random people who popped up on the page then was never scene again. If a new character was introduced into the story-line it was always for the bigger picture. I really enjoyed that each character we were introduced to had a significant role, whether it be small for big. Celeana, the main character, is such a strong-willed girl who's been through a lot for someone her age. She's such a smart character who's calculated and knows what to fight for and fights for what she believes. I love that not once through this book did her character ever become annoying like some tend to do. This series is focused on her and her journey to fight for her freedom. We follow her along as she attempts to make friends with those who she sought out as her enemies that conclude in unexpected relationships. Celeana loves books, I just love characters who love books!! Hehehe. I also thoroughly enjoy her personality and the banter between her and the other characters, not to mention she is super bass-ass. “My name is Celaena Sardothien. But it makes no difference if my name’s Celaena or Lillian or Bitch, because I’d still beat you, no matter what you call me.” The plot was very intriguing and fast-paced, not once was I ever bored during the duration of the books. Things were properly dragged out and the book just made sense. Of courses there was always questions because of the mysteries that lie inside these pages but they flow with the book. I'm very new to the realm of Fantasy and I'd have to say that so far Sarah J. Maas is by far one of my favorite fantasy authors. I can't wait to continue with this series!
